The reverse of the coin depicts the figure of Herakles, perhaps better known by his later Roman name Hercules, armed with his club and the skin of the Nemean lion. The coin is set in a later 18K gold bezel and 14K gold chain.

According to mythology, Dionysus is the son of Zeus and Semele. He is associated with fertility, ecstasy, art and literature, and the Dionysian festivals of ancient Greece included performances of tragedy and comedy. Though in early Greek art he was frequently depicted as a bearded man, his likeness on this coin is more consistent with later interpretations of the god, where he is youthful, virile and effeminate.
