Andy Warhol, from the Pictures of Ink series

Cibachrome print on photographic paper

This work by Vik Muniz, the contemporary Brazilian artist renowned for his use of unconventional materials and techniques, beautifully captures the essence of the great Andy Warhol. Rendered dot by dot by Muniz's own hand, the famous Warhol portrait becomes slightly abstracted, making for a more impactful and interactive visual experience.

After painstakingly creating this portrait, Muniz photographed the drawing while the glistening ink was still wet. Using the traditional Cibachrome printing process, the resulting photographic print captures every detail of the ink with mesmerizing clarity. When viewers step back, the iconic Warhol fantastically materializes in all his glory. Created in 2000, this work is part of a limited edition of six, with an additional four artist's proofs.

Vik Muniz is celebrated for his innovative use of materials, such as chocolate syrup, dirt and tomato sauce. His unique approach has garnered widespread acclaim from both the art establishment and commercial interests. Muniz frequently incorporates popular figures into his work, with past subjects including Marilyn Monroe, Jackie Kennedy and Maria Callas. His choice of medium often reflects the dual nature of his subjects, spanning the spectrum from high art to everyday materials. Muniz’s versatility is evident in his use of both unconventional substances and traditional photographic processes like Cibachrome and Ilfoflex. Regardless of the medium, Muniz's art is both challenging and accessible, a rare feat that has cemented his popularity among collectors and the general public alike.
