Set of 16 Demitasse Cups and Saucers
Reed & Barton and Lenox
Date marked 1936

This exceptional set of 16 demitasse cups and saucers exemplifies the elegance of fine dining, blending the artistry of Reed & Barton’s iconic Francis I sterling silver pattern with Lenox’s porcelain liners. Crafted in 1936, this ensemble is a testament to American craftsmanship, featuring intricate floral details that elevate the ritual of serving espresso and strong coffee.

The Francis I pattern, introduced in 1906, is celebrated for its intricate detail, with fifteen unique fruit-and-flower motifs adorning its design. The sterling silver cups display the luxurious artistry that made this pattern a favorite among dignitaries, including three American Presidents—Wilson, Truman and Eisenhower. The addition of Lenox porcelain liners, known for their superior quality and refinement, enhances both the aesthetic appeal and functionality of this set.

Reed & Barton, a renowned silversmithing firm, established itself as a leader in American silverware design. Its enduring legacy includes producing official medals for the 1996 Summer Olympics and serving the White House. Lenox, equally esteemed, has created tableware for presidential households, cementing its reputation as America’s most prestigious china maker throughout the 20th century. Additionally, this set was part of the prestigious Red McCombs collection, which has been highly publicized and studied.
