Louis XV Silver Presentation Box with Edwardian Engravings
Box crafted 1762-1768
Engraved 1904

This exquisite Louis XV silver presentation box represents a unique fusion of French and English silverwork. Originally crafted in Paris between 1762 and 1768, as indicated by the French charge mark "A," the box features intricate pierced acanthus scrolls adorned with flowerheads and sprays. At its center, an oval medallion in repoussé depicts three cherubic putti, while a front medallion showcases two more, all symbolizing themes of love and unity. Elevated on four elegant scroll feet with shell surmounts, the box reflects the opulence of the Louis XV era. The box is stamped with the letter "F" for foreign to reflect its importation to Britain, as this box embodies an exceptional Anglo-French legacy.

A significant later addition to this presentation box occurred in London in 1904, as indicated by the British date letter "i," where it was inscribed in honor of Mrs. Margaret Stratton Tubb's 25th wedding anniversary. The Edwardian era engraving on the base reads, "Presented to Mrs. Tubb on the occasion of her silver wedding anniversary. January 8, 1905." Further engraved are thirty-five names, including Margaret Child-Villiers, Countess of Jersey, and her daughter Mary Julia Child-Villiers, the Countess of Longford—renowned members of English society who esteemed Mrs. Tubb as a dedicated member of the Bicester community. Mrs. Tubb, a second cousin of the Countess of Jersey, shared her life with Henry Tubb, a banker and English cricketer. The two married in 1880 and shared a deep love of cricket. Together, they resided at Chesterton Lodge, where Mrs. Tubb was a passionate benefactress, particularly of St. Mary’s Church and the Bicester Cottage Hospital. Additionally, this box was a part of the prestigious Red McCombs collection, which has been highly publicized and studied.
