George Smith, Robert Tate, William Nicholson and Ewin Hoult were renowned silversmiths of the early 19th century, contributing to the rich tradition of English silverwork. Their works, especially candlestick holders and chambersticks, are celebrated for their quality and design, often commissioned by the aristocracy, as seen with the inclusion of the Barons Belhaven’s crest. The presence of such notable heraldry imbues these chambersticks with historical resonance, linking them to the lineage of William Hamilton, the seventh Lord and Baron Belhaven. More recently, these remarkable chambersticks were also part of the iconic Red McCombs collection, which has been highly publicized and studied.
