Circa 1820-1830

This pair of exquisite pink opaline perfume flasks, crafted by the renowned Jean Baptiste Des Vignes during the Charles X period, exemplifies the refined artistry and opulent design sensibilities of early 19th-century France. Known as "Eau de Mélisse" flasks, they are rendered in the delicate and rare hue of "gorge de pigeon" opaline—a luminous shade reminiscent of a pigeon's throat, celebrated for its subtle play of pink and lavender tones.

Eau de Mélisse translates to "Melissa Water," referring to lemon balm, an aromatic herb known for its calming and medicinal properties. Historically, Eau de Mélisse was a popular herbal distillation believed to aid digestion, reduce stress and alleviate headaches. It was often used by perfumers and apothecaries during the 18th and 19th centuries.

The cathedral-style mounts, executed in finely chiseled and openwork bronze, reflect the Gothic Revival influence that permeated decorative arts during the reign of Charles X. The upper edges, adorned with gilding and patination, beautifully contrast with the pink opaline glass. This vibrant, opaque color became possible in the early 19th century due to technological advancements in glassmaking, which allowed artisans to achieve such hues through the addition of gold chloride or manganese. Perfume flasks such as these were both functional and symbols of status and refinement, often displayed as decorative art objects in the homes of the French elite.
