The work of Russian Jewish painter Moisey Kogan, this Impressionist-style work displays the artist’s intuitive understanding of light and color, from the cheery hues of the houses and onion church domes that rise above the roof line, to the kaleidoscopic tones of the snow, crisply tinted with the shadows of the bare trees. A revered artist, Moisey Kogan is considered a master of Russian rural and architectural landscapes. A veteran of World War II, he graduated from the Surikov Academy of Arts in Moscow In 1953. His work was greatly inspired by the poet Sergei Essenin, whose influence translates into the colorful, storytelling quality of many of Kogan's paintings. Kogan's rural motifs are often characterized as geodesic naiveté, noted for their spontaneity, sincerity and simplicity. His works are in numerous private collections and museums in Russia, Europe and the United States.
