This sophisticated ewer and basin set exemplifies the refined aesthetic sensibilities and technical mastery that distinguished German silverplating during the early 20th century. Created by the prestigious Quist manufactory of Esslingen, the ensemble would have been used for washing the hands and face, and was a luxury item since the 17th century.
The urn-shaped ewer features vertical panels framed by repeating flowerhead borders. Its dramatic C-scroll handle, wrapped in acanthus leaves, sweeps outward with Baroque flair, while the pronounced spout ends in an elegant everted rim. A delicate chain of drop leaves encircles the neck, seamlessly uniting its sculptural elements. The circular basin mirrors the ewer’s design, with a broad rim adorned in matching flowerhead motifs and a foot encircled by acanthus detailing, creating a refined and cohesive Neoclassical composition.
This remarkable set emerged from the Quist manufactory during a period of particular creative vitality. Founded in 1866 by Jakob Schweizer and later acquired by Friedrich Wilhelm Quist, the firm established itself as a leading force in German decorative arts through technical innovation and artistic excellence. Under the leadership of Fritz Quist, who guided the company through the early decades of the 20th century, the manufactory produced works that balanced traditional craftsmanship with modern sensibilities. Additionally, this set was a part of the prestigious Red McCombs collection, which has been highly publicized and studied.
