Oil on canvas
Laureano Barrau Sur la place de Clichy vividly portrays the bustling vibrancy of late 19th-century Paris. The scene focuses on the lively crowd at the Place de Clichy, a major crossroads between the Batignolles and Montmartre neighborhoods. Two elegantly dressed women stand in the foreground, their stunning outfits rendered with remarkable detail, each fabric texture meticulously depicted to capture the opulence of Parisian fashion. Montmartre was famed as the Bohemian epicenter, filled with dance halls, cafés and cabarets, while the broader area embodied the modernization of Paris during the Belle Époque.
Barrau captures the interplay of old and new with remarkable precision. The freshly widened streets and six-story buildings with characteristic mansard roofs frame a lively tableau of gas-lit avenues, horse-drawn omnibuses and electric trams. Tracks for the trams, visible in the foreground, underscore the era's transition into modernity. The two young women hailing a horse-drawn omnibus embody the dynamic energy of a city in motion.
Born in Barcelona, Laureano Barrau studied under Antonio Caba at the Escuela de Bellas Artes before receiving the prestigious Fortuny Pension in 1884, allowing him to refine his skills in Paris. There, he studied with Jean-Léon Gérôme, immersing himself in the academic tradition. His career flourished, earning accolades at national and international exhibitions. In 1929, he was appointed a member of the Salon de la Nationale des Beaux-Arts de Paris. His works are included in notable collections such as the Prado Museum and the Getty Museum.
