This canvas, entitled Veules-les-Roses, is quintessential of Butler's oeuvre, capturing the charming coastal town in a flurry of mesmerizing neon hues and energetic brushstrokes.
The commune of Veules-les-Roses is one of the oldest in the Normandy region, starting as a small fishing village around the 4th century CE. Butler renders the historic appeal of the town's medieval architecture and the lushness of the vegetation with a magnificent array of electric blues, greens and pinks. The crisp lines that define the trees and rooftops in the foreground contrast beautifully with the soft strokes that the artist uses in the background, infusing the scene with a masterful atmospheric perspective. In pristine condition and likely retaining its original stretchers, this work pulls viewers into its alluring aura, a testament to Butler's timeless talent.
Born in Columbus, Ohio in 1861, Butler moved to New York in 1882 to study at the Art Students League under several major American artists, including William Merritt Chase. Within three years, the young artist had moved to Paris, receiving an honorable mention at the Salon of 1888. This would prove to be a fateful year for Butler, when he also met and befriended Claude Monet and moved to Giverny to join the thriving artist community there. He eventually became Monet's son-in-law, and he was the only artist that Monet allowed to paint alongside him. Butler would briefly return to the United States between 1913 and 1921, creating important murals and participating in major exhibitions such as the Armory Show, and then return to Giverny until his death in 1936.
