Victorian Silver Candlesticks
Creswick & Co.
Hallmarked Sheffield, 1843
Bobèches by Hawksworth, Eyre & Co.

This exceptional pair of Victorian Rococo Revival silver candlesticks showcases the exquisite craftsmanship of Creswick & Co., with bobèches by Hawksworth, Eyre & Co. The elegant design features inverted baluster-form standards adorned with lavish foliate and scrolling acanthus chasing, accented by beaded vertical edge bands. The high-domed bases display intricate cartouche and foliate-chased panels, while the elongated candle cups are fully embellished with swirling foliage and acanthus motifs.

The removable bobèches exhibit complementary foliate chasing. The sculptural depth of these candlesticks exemplifies the Rococo Revival style, a design movement that flourished in the mid-19th century, reviving the ornate and fluid aesthetics of 18th-century Rococo.

Creswick & Co. was a respected family-run silversmithing firm composed of brothers Thomas, James and Nathaniel Creswick. Known for their superior quality and refined craftsmanship, they earned international acclaim by exhibiting at the Great Exhibition of 1851, where they were awarded a prestigious Prize Medal. Along with the removable bobèches by Hawksworth, Eyre & Co., these candlesticks are a remarkable testament to Victorian artistry. Additionally, this pair was a part of the prestigious Red McCombs collection, which has been highly publicized and studied.
