Outstanding in provenance and artistry, these wine coolers were crafted by George Clements and presented by William Gladstone to his son, Henry Neville Gladstone, as a wedding gift in 1890. The pair displays exceptional, ample decoration with a stunning sculptural quality. Each is cast and chased in high relief with dynamic hunting scenes featuring boars, stags and dogs. The decoration continues onto the handles, shaped as eagles perched atop classical figures, and the rims of the vessels are brimming with life-sized foliage and fruit for an impressive trompe l'œil effect.

Prime Minister of England from 1868-74, 1880-1885, 1886, and 1892-1894, William Gladstone served in the office more than any other individual in history. He was also one of the oldest-serving prime ministers, playing a role in politics for over sixty years and resigning from his last appointment at the age of 84. He was beloved by the British people and was known affectionately as "The People's William" and "The Grand Old Man."
